Ely's Harbor holidays
Ely's Harbour is a sheltered bay dotted with small islands at the western end of Bermuda, where boats anchor in clear, shallow water. Bermuda itself is a British Overseas Territory in the North Atlantic, a hook-shaped chain of islands joined by bridges, lying about 1,000 km off the coast of North Carolina.
Beaches
Bermuda is known for beaches of pink-tinged sand, coloured by tiny red shell fragments. Horseshoe Bay on the south shore is a long curve of sand, and at its western end a small rocky cove known as Baby Beach has calm water for children. Warwick Long Bay and Elbow Beach are nearby on the same coast. Tobacco Bay, near the Town of St George's in the east, is a sheltered cove popular for snorkelling. Things to do
The Town of St George, founded in 1612, and its fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with narrow lanes and old stone churches. The Royal Naval Dockyard at the western tip holds the National Museum of Bermuda in its old fortress. Hamilton, the capital, has shops and restaurants along Front Street, and the Crystal Caves show underground lakes beneath stalactites. Somerset Bridge, next to Ely's Harbour, is a small drawbridge with a gap that opens just wide enough for a sailing boat's mast.

Bermuda has a subtropical climate influenced by the Gulf Stream. May to October is the warm beach season, with calm, sunny days and humid summers, while winters are mild but windy and often cloudy. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and storms most often pass near the island between August and October. Cruise ships bring the most visitors in summer, mainly to the Royal Naval Dockyard.

Resorts and hotels stand along the south shore beaches, in and around Hamilton and at the eastern and western ends of the island. Visitors cannot rent ordinary cars in Bermuda, so many choose accommodation near a beach, a bus route or a ferry stop; small electric vehicles and scooters can be rented.

Airport and getting there
L.F. Wade International Airport (BDA) is at the eastern end of Bermuda, with direct flights from several cities on the US East Coast, from Toronto and from London, varying by season. Ely's Harbour at the western end is roughly an hour away by taxi. Public buses and ferries connect Hamilton with the Royal Naval Dockyard and other parts of the island; check current timetables.
