Paradise Island holidays
Across a short bridge from downtown Nassau, Paradise Island is a small island on the north side of Nassau Harbour in the Bahamas, known for the Atlantis resort and its long white beaches. The island was called Hog Island until the early 1960s, when it was renamed and developed for tourism.
Beaches
Cabbage Beach runs along most of the north shore of Paradise Island, a wide strip of white sand in front of Atlantis and the hotels further east; on windy days Cabbage Beach can have stronger waves, so families often choose calmer spots. Within Atlantis, Paradise Lagoon offers more sheltered water; check access arrangements for the resort's beaches and lagoons. On New Providence, Cable Beach lies about 10 km west of downtown Nassau, beside the Baha Mar resort. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Cabbage Beach.
Things to do
Atlantis combines a casino, a marina, a water park called Aquaventure and large marine habitats with lagoons and aquariums, some of which are open to visitors without a hotel stay (check current access and tickets). Downtown Nassau is a walk and a bridge away: Bay Street and the Straw Market, the cruise piers at Prince George Wharf, the Queen's Staircase, 66 steps cut into the limestone in the late 18th century, and Fort Fincastle above it. Junkanoo, the Bahamian street parade with costumes and drums, takes place on Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Boat and air excursions from Nassau visit the Exumas, including trips to see the swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, while Blue Lagoon Island, with its dolphin programmes, is reached by boat.

The Bahamas are warm all year. December to April is the drier and busiest season, although occasional winter cold fronts bring cooler, windy days. From May to October it is hotter and more humid, with short tropical showers, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Days with several cruise ships in port make downtown Nassau noticeably busier.

Paradise Island has large resorts and holiday apartments, mainly around Atlantis and along Cabbage Beach, alongside private residential areas. Cable Beach, west of Nassau, is the other main resort strip on New Providence, and downtown Nassau has smaller hotels closer to the port and the sights.

Airport and getting there
Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), on the west of New Providence, is about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi from Paradise Island, depending on traffic. Two bridges link the island with Nassau, and water taxis cross the harbour from downtown. Nassau is also a major cruise port, and ferries and small planes connect it with the Out Islands.
