Tawila Island (Hurghada) holidays
Once a small fishing village, Hurghada has grown into a major beach resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast, with hotels stretching for tens of kilometres along the shore of the Red Sea Governorate. Tawila Island, a low, sandy island about 40 km to the north, is a boat trip from Hurghada and El Gouna, and the sea temperature on this page is measured off the island.
Beaches
Most beaches in Hurghada belong to hotels, and many have a jetty that leads over the coral to deeper water, so reef shoes are useful. Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh, south of the city, have wide sheltered bays with sandy beaches that suit families, while El Gouna to the north is a lagoon town built on canals with its own beaches. Clearer water and softer sand are often found on the islands: boat trips go to the Giftun Islands, part of a protected area with the beach of Mahmya, and to Orange Bay, and longer trips reach the Tawila islands further north.
Things to do
The coral reefs are what bring many visitors to Hurghada: snorkelling boats and dive centres leave daily for the Giftun Islands and nearby reefs. Hurghada Marina has a promenade with cafés and yachts, and El Dahar, the old town, has a traditional market. Desert trips by quad bike or jeep lead into the Eastern Desert to Bedouin camps. A long day trip by road reaches Luxor and its temples on the Nile, about four hours away.

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for most visitors, and the Christmas, Easter and European autumn holidays are the busiest.

Resorts in Hurghada itself are closest to the marina and restaurants, Makadi Bay and Sahl Hasheesh are quieter and more family-oriented, and El Gouna has a car-free feel along its lagoons.

Airport and getting there
Hurghada International Airport (HRG) lies just south-west of the city centre, about 15 minutes by taxi, and 30 to 45 minutes from El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay.
