Tokashiki Island holidays
About 30 km west of Naha, Tokashiki is the largest of the Kerama Islands, part of Keramashoto National Park in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Clear blue water – known in Okinawa as "Kerama blue" – coral reefs and sandy coves make it a popular day trip and overnight escape from the main island of Okinawa.
Beaches
Aharen Beach, in a bay in the south of Tokashiki, is the island's main beach, with a small village of guesthouses, cafés and snorkel rental behind the sand; coral and tropical fish can be seen a short swim from shore. Tokashiku Beach, farther north on the west coast, is a quieter sandy bay where sea turtles are often seen feeding on seagrass. Both beaches are sheltered from the open sea, though currents can be strong beyond the reef edge, so it is best to snorkel in the marked areas. Things to do
Snorkelling and diving are the main activities on Tokashiki, with dive shops in Aharen running trips to reefs around the Kerama Islands. From about January to March, humpback whales gather in the waters around the Keramas, and whale-watching boats leave from Tokashiki and Naha. Lookouts on the hills give views over the bays and the neighbouring islands, and kayak and stand-up paddle tours explore the coves.

Tokashiki has a subtropical climate, warm for most of the year. The rainy season usually falls in May and June, summer is hot and humid, and typhoons mainly affect the islands in summer and early autumn, roughly June to October, when ferries can be cancelled at short notice. Spring and autumn are good times to visit, and winter is mild but windier, with rougher seas.
Hotels and where to stay
Most accommodation on Tokashiki is in Aharen: small guesthouses, pensions and a few villa-style hotels within walking distance of the beach. Tokashiki village by the port has fewer places to stay, and a village bus links the port with Aharen. Many visitors come for the day from Naha, but an overnight stay gives quiet evenings on the beach after the last boat has left.

Airport and getting there
Naha Airport (OKA) is the gateway; Tomari Port in Naha is about 20 minutes away by taxi, or a monorail ride to Miebashi Station followed by a walk of about 10 minutes. From Tomari, the Marine Liner Tokashiki high-speed boat normally takes around 35 minutes and the larger Ferry Tokashiki about 70 minutes to Tokashiki Port; booking ahead is advisable in summer and at weekends.
