Hong Kong holidays
A special administrative region of China on the South China Sea, Hong Kong packs about seven and a half million people onto Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, the New Territories and more than 260 outlying islands. Its skyline faces Victoria Harbour, yet much of the territory is country park, hills and coast, with beaches a short bus ride from the towers.
Beaches
The government looks after several dozen public beaches with lifeguards, changing rooms and, on many, shark nets during the swimming season. On the south side of Hong Kong Island, Repulse Bay is a wide crescent of sand below apartment towers, with calm water that suits children; Deep Water Bay, Stanley and Shek O are close by, and Big Wave Bay is the local surf beach. Things to do
The Peak Tram climbs to Victoria Peak for the classic view over the harbour, and the Star Ferry crosses between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui in a few minutes. From the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade, the nightly Symphony of Lights show plays across the skyline. On Lantau, the Ngong Ping 360 cable car rises to the Tian Tan Buddha, and the stilt houses of Tai O fishing village are a bus ride away. Temple Street Night Market, the M+ museum in West Kowloon, Ocean Park and Hong Kong Disneyland fill other days, and the Dragon's Back ridge trail ends at Big Wave Bay.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Hong Kong warms fastest from April to May, by about 3 °C (5 °F) in one month.
Summer in Hong Kong is hot, humid and wet, and tropical cyclones can affect the city from May to November, most often between July and September; when a high storm signal is raised, beaches, ferries and many businesses close. October to December is the most comfortable season, drier and clearer, while spring brings fog and drizzle.
Hotels and where to stay
Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side has harbour views and plenty of shopping, Central and Admiralty put business districts and nightlife close, and Causeway Bay and Wan Chai are busy shopping areas with more mid-range rooms. The south side of the island is quieter and closer to the beaches.

Airport and getting there
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is on Chek Lap Kok off Lantau Island; the Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in about 25 minutes. High-speed trains leave West Kowloon for Shenzhen, Guangzhou and other cities in mainland China, and ferries and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge link the city with Macau.
