Tel Aviv holidays
Founded in 1909 on the sand dunes north of the ancient port of Jaffa, Tel Aviv is Israel's economic and cultural centre on the Mediterranean coast; the two now form one municipality, Tel Aviv-Yafo. Its "White City" of 1930s buildings in the International Style, often called Bauhaus, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a promenade runs along beaches for most of the length of the seafront.
Beaches
The city beaches are sandy, free and supervised by lifeguards in season, and many lie behind breakwaters that calm the water. Gordon and Frishman in the centre are popular, with cafés, volleyball and sunbeds; Hilton Beach is popular with surfers, and Metzitzim in the north is shallow and suits families with small children. Nordau Beach is separated by a wall and keeps different days for men and for women. Rip currents occur along the Tel Aviv coast, so swim only where a lifeguard is on duty.
Things to do
Old Jaffa has a clock tower, stone alleys, a flea market and a small harbour with views back along Tel Aviv's shoreline. Carmel Market sells fruit, spices and street food, and the Nahalat Binyamin crafts fair sets up next to it on Tuesdays and Fridays. Neve Tzedek, one of the first neighbourhoods built outside Jaffa, has low houses and boutiques, while Rothschild Boulevard is lined with White City buildings and cafés. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the restored German Templer colony of Sarona and the boardwalk of the old port fill other days, and Jerusalem is less than an hour away by train.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Tel Aviv gains about 3 °C (6 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers in Tel Aviv are long, hot and humid, and almost all the rain falls between November and March. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the city and the beach. Swarms of jellyfish often reach the coast in early summer. On Shabbat, from Friday evening to Saturday evening, most public transport stops and many shops close.
Hotels and where to stay
The large hotels stand along HaYarkon Street and the seafront, a few steps from the beaches. Neve Tzedek and the streets around Rothschild Boulevard have boutique hotels, Jaffa has rooms in old stone buildings, and the north near the old port is quieter.

Airport and getting there
Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) lies about 20 km south-east of the city, and trains reach Tel Aviv's stations in around 20 minutes, except on Shabbat. Trains also run from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and along the coast to Haifa. Within the city, the light rail Red Line, buses and a large bike-share network cover the centre.
