Cayo Largo holidays
Cayo Largo del Sur is a narrow, low-lying cay about 25 km long in the Canarreos Archipelago, off the south coast of Cuba, with a string of white-sand beaches along its southern shore. The island was developed for tourism only, so there is no Cuban town on it: hotel staff live in a small settlement by the marina, and almost every visitor stays in an all-inclusive resort.
Beaches
Playa Paraíso and Playa Sirena, on the western tip of Cayo Largo, are the island's best-known beaches: fine white sand, shallow turquoise water and sandbars that appear at low tide, which suits families with small children. Playa Lindamar fronts part of the resort area, Playa Blanca lies farther east along the south coast, and a remote section of the south coast is used for naturism. Sargassum seaweed can wash up in some months, and there is little shade away from the beach bars. The sea temperature on this page is measured in the shallows off Playa Paraíso.
Things to do
Boat trips from the marina visit Cayo Iguana, a small islet where rock iguanas come out to meet the boats, and stop at sandbanks and coral reefs for snorkelling. Divers find reefs and drop-offs a short boat ride from Cayo Largo. Near the marina, a turtle centre raises hatchlings from eggs laid on the island's beaches, and in the nesting season, roughly May to September, guided night walks look for turtles coming ashore (check what runs during your stay).

Cayo Largo is warm all year. The drier season usually runs from about November to April, which is also the main season for visitors from Canada and Europe. From May to October the weather is hotter and more humid, with short afternoon showers, and the Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to November, with the greatest risk from about August to October.

Accommodation on Cayo Largo is almost entirely in a handful of all-inclusive resorts, most of them on the south coast around Playa Lindamar. Airport and getting there
Vilo Acuña Airport (CYO) lies in the north-western part of Cayo Largo, a short transfer from the resort area. Air access depends on the operator and the season, with domestic flights from Havana and, in some years, charter flights from abroad, so confirm a bookable route to Cayo Largo before arranging your stay. Check Cuba's current visa requirements, including the e-visa where applicable, and complete the D'Viajeros entry form before travelling.
