Flamenco Beach holidays
Flamenco Beach is a horseshoe bay of white sand on the north coast of Culebra, a small island municipality of Puerto Rico that lies between the main island and the US Virgin Islands. The beach curves for well over a kilometre around sheltered, turquoise water, and at its western end two rusting tanks recall the decades when the US Navy used Culebra for training, until the 1970s.
Beaches
Flamenco Beach has soft sand, gentle waves on most days and a reef-sheltered bay that suits families; facilities and food kiosks are near the main entrance, with camping areas behind the beach, and the western end leads past the tanks towards rocky points. Carlos Rosario Beach, a short walk over the hill from Flamenco, has reef close to shore for snorkelling. Zoni Beach on the east coast is a long, wild stretch where sea turtles nest, and Tamarindo and Melones on the west side are calm snorkelling spots near the island's only town, Dewey. Things to do
Culebrita, a small uninhabited island off Culebra's east coast, is reached by water taxi or kayak tour and has a ruined lighthouse, Tortuga Beach and rock pools on its north shore. Much of the coast and many offshore cays belong to the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, a nesting area for seabirds and turtles. Dewey has a small harbour, restaurants and rental shops for golf carts, jeeps and bicycles, the usual way to get around Culebra.

Culebra is warm all year and cooled by the trade winds. The drier months are usually from about January to April, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. Flamenco Beach is busiest at weekends, in the summer holidays and around Easter, when visitors come over from the main island of Puerto Rico; sargassum seaweed can wash up in some months.

Culebra has no large resorts: stays are small inns, guesthouses, villas and campsites, most of them around Dewey and Ensenada Honda. Flamenco Beach has a designated beachfront campground as well as beach accommodation nearby; check camping availability and booking arrangements with the campground office.

Airport and getting there
Ferries for foot passengers run from the port of Ceiba, on the east coast of the main island of Puerto Rico, to Dewey on Culebra; tickets sell out at busy times, so book early. Small planes fly to Culebra's Benjamín Rivera Noriega Airport from San Juan and Ceiba. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, about an hour's drive from Ceiba, is the gateway for international flights.
