Seven Mile Beach holidays
Most of Grand Cayman's hotels line Seven Mile Beach, the long public beach on the west coast of the largest of the Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean. Despite its name, the beach is shorter than seven miles, a continuous curve of white sand between George Town and West Bay.
Beaches
Seven Mile Beach is public along its whole length, with calm, clear water on most days and a gently shelving sandy bottom that suits children. Public Beach and Governor's Beach have shade and facilities, while Cemetery Beach at the northern end has a reef a short swim offshore for snorkelling. In winter, occasional north-west winds, known locally as nor'westers, bring waves to this usually sheltered coast. On the other side of Grand Cayman, Rum Point and Starfish Point on the North Sound are shallow and quiet.
Things to do
A boat trip to the North Sound is the classic outing from Seven Mile Beach: at Stingray City Sandbar visitors stand in shallow water among southern stingrays, while the separate, deeper Stingray City site is visited by divers and snorkellers. Off the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, the former US Navy ship USS Kittiwake was sunk as an artificial reef in 2011 and is dived and snorkelled today. George Town has the cruise tender piers, duty-free shops and the National Museum, Camana Bay is a planned town centre with restaurants near the middle of the beach, and West Bay has Hell, a field of jagged black limestone, and the Cayman Turtle Centre. Inland, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is home to the blue iguana, found only on Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman is warm all year. December to April is the dry and busiest season. From May to October it is hotter, more humid and rainier, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November; Hurricane Ivan caused severe damage in 2004. Days with several cruise ships in port make George Town and the Stingray City trips much busier.

Resorts, condominiums and villas stand along almost the whole of Seven Mile Beach, from the edge of George Town north to West Bay. Quieter stays are found on the East End and North Side of Grand Cayman, around Rum Point and Cayman Kai.

Airport and getting there
Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM), in George Town, is about 10 to 20 minutes by car from most hotels on Seven Mile Beach. Direct flights come from North America, the United Kingdom and nearby Caribbean islands, and small planes connect Grand Cayman with Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
