Tobago holidays
Tobago is the smaller of the two main islands of Trinidad and Tobago, about 40 km long, in the southern Caribbean north-east of Trinidad. Its best-known beach, Pigeon Point, lies at the island's south-western tip near Crown Point, where the airport and many of the hotels are.
Beaches
Pigeon Point Heritage Park has a long white-sand beach, a thatched-roof jetty, calm water inside the reef and an entrance fee, with changing rooms and beach bars; the windier eastern side is used for kitesurfing. Store Bay, within walking distance of Pigeon Point, is a busy public beach and a departure point for glass-bottom boat trips. On the Caribbean coast, Mt Irvine Bay has waves for surfing in winter, while Castara and Englishman's Bay, further north-east, are quiet bays below forested hills. Things to do
Glass-bottom boats cross to Buccoo Reef, a protected reef area, and stop at the Nylon Pool, a shallow sandbar in the middle of the lagoon. The village of Buccoo is known for Sunday School, a Sunday-night gathering with steelpan, DJs and food; check the local programme during your stay. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve, protected since 1776, has rainforest trails and birdwatching, Argyle Waterfall lies near Roxborough, and from Speyside boats visit the bird sanctuary of Little Tobago and offshore dive sites, where manta rays are occasionally seen. Leatherback turtles nest on several beaches from about March to August, and guided night watches can be arranged.

Tobago is warm all year. The dry season runs from about January to May, and the rainy season from about June to December, with heavy showers and occasional longer spells of rain. The island lies at the southern edge of the Atlantic hurricane belt, and direct hits are rare, but tropical storms can bring rough seas and heavy rain.

Crown Point and the Store Bay area offer a wide choice of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants near Pigeon Point and the airport. Resorts also line parts of the Caribbean coast around Black Rock, Stonehaven Bay and Mount Irvine, and small guesthouses in Castara and Speyside suit a quieter stay.

A.N.R. Robinson International Airport (TAB) at Crown Point is about 2 km from Pigeon Point. Flights from Piarco International Airport on Trinidad take about 25 minutes; international routes from North America and Europe, including seasonal services, vary, so check connections for your dates. Fast ferries link Port of Spain on Trinidad with Scarborough in roughly three to three and a half hours, depending on the vessel and sea conditions.
