Saint Lucia holidays
Saint Lucia is a volcanic island in the Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean, between Martinique and St Vincent, and Soufrière, its old French colonial capital, lies on the south-west coast beneath the two Pitons. Gros Piton and Petit Piton, steep volcanic spires rising straight from the sea, are part of the Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
Beaches
Sugar Beach, also called Jalousie Beach, between the Pitons just south of Soufrière, is the island's best-known beach: a crescent of imported white sand at the foot of the mountains, with calm water and snorkelling on the reef. Anse Chastanet, north of the town, has dark volcanic sand and a coral reef close to shore that is part of a marine reserve. In the north of Saint Lucia, Reduit Beach at Rodney Bay is a long, lively beach with water sports, while farther south on the west coast, Marigot Bay is a deep, sheltered cove. As Saint Lucia is a small island, the sea temperature on this page is for the coast by Soufrière.
Things to do
The Sulphur Springs, just outside Soufrière, are known as a "drive-in volcano": steaming vents and bubbling mud pools, with warm mud baths in the stream below. The Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens have a waterfall coloured by minerals, and the Tet Paul Nature Trail gives close views of the Pitons. Gros Piton can be climbed with a local guide in about four to five hours up and down. Boat trips from Rodney Bay and Castries sail down the west coast to Soufrière, with snorkelling stops and views of the Pitons from the sea. In the north of Saint Lucia, Pigeon Island National Landmark has fort ruins and a small beach, and Gros Islet holds a Friday-night street party.

Saint Lucia is warm all year, cooled by the trade winds. The drier season usually runs from about December to May, the busiest time for visitors, and the wetter season from about June to November, which is also the Atlantic hurricane season, with the highest risk from about August to October. Rain showers are often short, even in the wet months.

Soufrière has hillside luxury resorts with views of the Pitons, while the north of Saint Lucia, around Rodney Bay and Gros Islet, has most of the all-inclusive resorts, restaurants and nightlife.

Airport and getting there
Hewanorra International Airport (UVF), near Vieux Fort in the south of Saint Lucia, has flights from North America and Europe and is about an hour by winding road from Soufrière. George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU), near Castries, serves regional flights from other Caribbean islands. Traffic drives on the left, and water taxis link Soufrière with Castries and Marigot Bay.
