Beaches

The main beach of Playa del Carmen runs north from Parque Fundadores, the square by the ferry pier, and gets livelier around Mamitas Beach, where beach clubs rent loungers and music plays through the day. Punta Esmeralda, farther north, is calmer and suits families, with a shallow lagoon where fresh water from a cenote meets the sea. South of the pier, the Playacar area has gated resorts along a quieter stretch of sand. Seaweed (sargassum) can reach the shore in some months, and some beaches clear it more often than others.

Things to do

Ferries from the pier in Playa del Carmen cross to Cozumel in under an hour, where reefs of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef draw divers and snorkellers. Xcaret, just south of Playa del Carmen, is an eco-park with underground rivers and cultural shows, while Xel-Há, farther south near Tulum, centres on snorkelling in a natural inlet. Inland, cenotes – natural pools in the limestone – are good for swimming and snorkelling, and the Maya ruins of Tulum stand on a cliff above the sea about an hour to the south.

Weather and best time to visit

At Playa del Carmen the sea stays above 26 °C / 79 °F all year, even in the coolest month.

The dry season, roughly December to April, brings sunny days and lower humidity and is the busiest time in Playa del Carmen. From June to November it is hotter and more humid, with short heavy showers, and this is also the Atlantic hurricane season. Sargassum arrivals vary from year to year and are usually heaviest between spring and late summer.

Hotels and where to stay

In Playa del Carmen, staying near Quinta Avenida puts restaurants and nightlife within walking distance, while the northern end around Punta Esmeralda is quieter. All-inclusive resorts are concentrated in Playacar in the south and along the coast north of the town centre.

Airport and getting there

Cancún International Airport (CUN) is about 50 km north of Playa del Carmen, around an hour by road, with ADO buses, shuttles and taxis to the town. Tulum International Airport (TQO), farther south, is another option. Playa del Carmen also has a station on the Tren Maya railway, and ADO buses connect it with Tulum, Cancún and other towns in the region.
