About Devil's Island

Devil's Island is the smallest of the three Salvation Islands, 15 kilometres off French Guiana's Atlantic coast, and infamous for the 1852–1953 French penal colony that held Alfred Dreyfus in solitary confinement from 1895 to 1899. Henri Charrière's 1969 memoir Papillon cemented the archipelago's reputation; neighbouring Île Royale carries the prison ruins, while Île Saint-Joseph hides the isolation cells in the jungle. Swimming is not the point here, as strong currents keep visitors focused on colonial history; the equatorial sea stays at 27–28 °C year-round.
