Golden Sands holidays
On Bulgaria's Black Sea coast about 17 km north of Varna, Golden Sands (Zlatni Pyasatsi) is one of the country's largest beach resorts, a strip of hotels between a long sandy beach and the wooded hills of a nature park. It has been built up since the 1950s and today draws families in the daytime and a younger crowd to its bars and clubs at night.
Beaches
The beach runs for about three and a half kilometres and is wide, with fine golden sand that gives the resort its name. The sea shelves gently, which suits children, and lifeguard towers, sunbed rentals and water sports line most of the shore. The southern end, towards the Riviera complex, is usually quieter than the central stretch around the main promenade.
Things to do
The Golden Sands Nature Park, one of the oldest protected areas in Bulgaria, rises right behind the hotels, with marked trails through beech and oak forest. Aladzha Monastery, a medieval rock monastery with monks' cells cut into a limestone cliff, lies inside the park a few kilometres from the beach. Varna is close enough for an afternoon: its Archaeological Museum holds the Varna Necropolis gold, among the oldest worked gold in the world, and the Sea Garden park runs along the city beach. Further north, the palace and botanical garden in Balchik and the cliffs of Cape Kaliakra make a full day out.

From June to September the sea at Golden Sands is warmer than 20 °C / 68 °F.
The main season runs roughly from May to October, although opening dates vary by hotel and a few stay open all year. July and August are hot, busy and at their liveliest at night, while June and early September are quieter and cheaper. Winters on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast are cold, and most of Golden Sands is quiet.
Hotels and where to stay
Golden Sands is almost entirely hotels, many of them all-inclusive, with apartments and a few villas in the hills behind. The centre around the promenade is best for nightlife, and the northern and southern ends suit families who want an early night.

Airport and getting there
Varna Airport (VAR) is about 25 km away, roughly 30 minutes by taxi; city bus line 409 runs from the airport through Varna to Golden Sands. Burgas Airport, about two hours south, is an alternative in summer. Buses and taxis link the resort with Varna, and the neighbouring resorts of Saints Constantine and Helena and Albena are a short drive along the coast.
