Rimini holidays
On the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna, Rimini is a resort city where about 15 km of sandy beach meet a Roman old town. The Arch of Augustus and the Tiberius Bridge, both still in use, date from the first centuries BC and AD, and the film director Federico Fellini was born in the city in 1920.
Beaches
Rimini's sandy beach runs from Torre Pedrera in the north to Miramare in the south, broken only by the harbour, and is divided into numbered beach establishments, the bagni, each with rows of umbrellas and loungers, lifeguards, showers and often a playground. The sea is shallow for a long way out, which makes Rimini a classic family beach, and free public stretches sit between the bagni. Marina Centro, near the Grand Hotel, is the busiest part, while San Giuliano a Mare and Rivabella north of the port are calmer.
Things to do
Rimini's old town is compact: the Arch of Augustus, the Tempio Malatestiano cathedral designed in part by Leon Battista Alberti, and Castel Sismondo, one of the three sites of the Fellini Museum along with Palazzo del Fulgor and Piazza Malatesta. The Domus del Chirurgo preserves the mosaic floors of a Roman doctor's house, whose surgical instruments are shown in the nearby City Museum. The hilltop Republic of San Marino, about 25 km away, is reached by bus from Rimini station. Families head for Italia in Miniatura at Viserba and the water parks of nearby Riccione.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Rimini gains about 5 °C (10 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
In Rimini, July and August, and above all the week of Ferragosto on 15 August, are the busiest and most expensive. June and early September are quieter and still warm, and many seafront hotels close from late autumn until Easter.
Hotels and where to stay
Hundreds of hotels line Rimini's seafront, many of them family-run with full board and a deal with a beach establishment. Marina Centro puts the old town and the nightlife close by, the southern districts from Bellariva to Miramare are built for families, and the northern ones up to Torre Pedrera are quieter.

Airport and getting there
Federico Fellini airport (RMI) at Miramare is about 8 km south of the centre and has mostly seasonal flights. Bologna airport (BLQ) is about 120 km away; from Bologna, trains reach Rimini in about an hour. The Metromare, a bus line on its own lane, runs along the coast from Rimini station to Riccione.
