Rovinj holidays
On the west coast of Istria in Croatia, the fishing town of Rovinj crowds its old quarter onto a rounded headland below the bell tower of Saint Euphemia's church. The headland was an island until the channel separating it from the mainland was filled in during the 18th century, and the town remains officially bilingual, Croatian and Italian, as Rovinj and Rovigno.
Beaches
Most beaches lie south of the old town, in and around Zlatni Rt (Golden Cape), a forest park of pines and cedars where paths lead to pebble coves and flat rocks. Lone Bay, at the edge of the park, has a longer pebble beach with cafés and gently sloping water that suits children. Mulini beach lies closer to the centre, and boats cross to the islands of Saint Catherine and Red Island (Crveni otok), where shallow bays are easy for families. The Rovinj archipelago counts about twenty islands and islets.
Things to do
Cobbled lanes, including Grisia with its art galleries, climb from the harbour to Saint Euphemia's church, whose bell tower can be climbed for a view over the islands. The Batana House eco-museum tells the story of the town's traditional flat-bottomed fishing boats. The Lim Channel, a long sea inlet a few kilometres north, is known for oyster and mussel farms and boat trips. Pula and its Roman amphitheatre are about 40 minutes away, and the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive up the coast.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Rovinj gains about 5 °C (10 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers in Rovinj are warm and sunny, and July and August fill the old town and the beaches. June and September are calmer and good for swimming and cycling in the forest park. Winters are mild and quiet; some hotels and restaurants close for the season, while others stay open all year.

Apartments in the old town put the harbour and restaurants on the doorstep, while the modern hotels stand by Lone Bay and Zlatni Rt, within walking distance of the centre. Large campsites lie along the coast north and south of town.

Airport and getting there
Pula Airport (PUY) is about 40 km south, roughly 40 minutes by car. Rijeka and Trieste airports are about two hours away. Buses link Rovinj with Pula, Poreč and Zagreb, and in summer catamarans run to Venice.
