Pula holidays
Pula is the largest city in Istria, at the southern tip of the peninsula on Croatia's northern Adriatic coast, and has been a port since Roman times. Its landmark is the Arena, a 1st-century Roman amphitheatre whose outer wall still stands with all four of its towers, a few minutes' walk from the harbour.
Beaches
Pula's coast is mostly pebbles and flat rocks, with pine woods behind the bays. The main beach areas lie south of the centre on the Verudela and Stoja peninsulas: Ambrela, a pebbly bay with an easy entry that suits families, and Valkane and Hawaii Beach, with clear water off the rocks. Further south, the protected cape of Kamenjak at Premantura has dozens of coves and low cliffs popular for jumping into the sea.
Things to do
Beyond the Arena, Roman Pula lives on in the Temple of Augustus on the old Forum and the Arch of the Sergii at the entrance to the old town. The Arena still hosts concerts and, every July, the Pula Film Festival. Brijuni National Park, a group of islands that was Tito's summer residence, is reached by boat from Fažana, 15 minutes up the coast. On the Verudela peninsula, an Austro-Hungarian fort now houses the Pula Aquarium.
Weather and best time to visit
The sea at Pula warms fastest from May to June, by about 5 °C (10 °F) in one month.
In summer an afternoon breeze, the maestral, cools the coast, while in winter the bora can blow cold and hard. Late June and early September combine warm water with fewer people than August.
Hotels and where to stay
The old town around the Forum puts the Arena, restaurants and the harbour on foot. Most beach hotels are grouped on the Verudela peninsula and at Zlatne Stijene (Golden Rocks), about 4 km south of the centre, and holiday apartments fill nearby Medulin and Premantura.

Airport and getting there
Pula Airport (PUY) is about 8 km from the centre, around 15 minutes by road, with mostly seasonal flights. Trieste airport is about two hours away by car and Zagreb about three; buses connect Pula with Rovinj, Rijeka and Zagreb, and in summer catamarans run to Venice.
