Le Morne holidays
Dominated by Le Morne Brabant, a basalt mountain rising straight out of the lagoon, the Le Morne peninsula forms the south-west corner of Mauritius. The mountain and its slopes, a refuge for escaped slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape.
Beaches
Long white-sand beaches wrap around the Le Morne peninsula, protected by a coral reef, so the lagoon is mostly calm and clear. The public beach on the western side is popular with local families at weekends, while much of the rest of the shore belongs to the grounds of large resorts. The lagoon off Le Morne is also a well-known kitesurfing spot, with the strongest wind from about May to October. Things to do
A marked trail climbs Le Morne Brabant, and the steep upper section to the viewpoint is usually walked with a guide. At the foot of the mountain stands the International Slave Route Monument. Seen from a seaplane or helicopter, the sand and silt running off the reef south of the peninsula look like an underwater waterfall. Inland, the Seven Coloured Earths and the waterfall of Chamarel and the forests of Black River Gorges National Park are a short drive from Le Morne. Boat trips from Le Morne and nearby Black River go to Île aux Bénitiers, a small island in the lagoon, and look for dolphins off the west coast in the morning.

Mauritius has a tropical climate. The southern summer, from about November to April, is hot and humid with more rain; the official cyclone season runs from 1 November to 15 May. The winter months from May to October are drier and cooler, with steady south-east trade winds that make the south-west coast windy.

Stays on the Le Morne peninsula are almost all large beach resorts, each on its own stretch of lagoon, several with kite schools and dive centres on site. Villas and guesthouses are found in the villages of La Gaulette and Black River to the north, closer to shops and restaurants.

Airport and getting there
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is in the south-east of Mauritius, roughly an hour and a quarter by road from Le Morne. Most resorts arrange transfers, and a hire car or taxi is the practical way to explore Mauritius, as buses to Le Morne are slow and infrequent.
