About Praia (Santiago)

Cape Verde's capital sits on Santiago Island's southern coast, 15 kilometres east of Cidade Velha — Africa's oldest European-built town, founded in 1462 and UNESCO-listed in 2009 for its Fortaleza Real de São Filipe and the Pelourinho slave-trading column. Praia da Quebra Canela is the urban city beach below the Plateau district, while Tarrafal sixty kilometres north opens a postcard turquoise crescent regarded as the island's finest. The Atlantic holds 23–25 °C from July through September; Nelson Mandela International airport sits ten minutes from downtown.
