Mykonos holidays
Mykonos is a small, dry island in the Cyclades, in the middle of the Aegean Sea, known for the whitewashed lanes of its main town, Chora, and for nightlife that runs from the beach clubs of the south coast to the bars of Little Venice. The sacred island of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, lies a short boat ride off its west coast.
Beaches
Many of the best-known beaches on Mykonos lie on the south coast, where the hills give some shelter from the meltemi, the strong north wind of summer. Psarou and Platys Gialos are sheltered sandy bays with sunbeds and shallow water, Ornos near Chora is popular with families, and Paradise and Super Paradise are known for their beach clubs and parties. On the north coast, Panormos and Agios Sostis are wilder and more exposed to the wind. The sea temperature on this page is measured off Super Paradise, on the south coast.
Things to do
The windmills of Kato Mili stand on a ridge above Little Venice, where old captains' houses rise straight out of the sea and fill up at sunset. In the old town, the whitewashed Paraportiani church is made of several chapels built together. Excursion boats leave the old port for Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the sanctuary of Apollo and extensive remains of an ancient port town; it is visited on day trips, as there is no accommodation for tourists. Inland, the village of Ano Mera has the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani.
Weather and best time to visit
From May to June the sea at Mykonos gains about 3 °C (6 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers on Mykonos are hot, dry and windy. The meltemi often blows hard in July and August, when ferries can be delayed and the north coast turns rough, and these are also the busiest and most expensive months, with cruise ships anchored off Chora. June and September are calmer and still warm. From November to March most hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close.
Hotels and where to stay
Chora puts restaurants, bars and the old port within walking distance but is loud at night. Ornos and Agios Ioannis are quieter and suit families, Platys Gialos and Psarou are for a beach holiday, and hotels at Kalo Livadi and Elia are more secluded.

Airport and getting there
Mykonos Airport (JMK) is about 4 km from Chora, with flights from Athens all year and direct flights from many European cities in summer. Ferries and fast boats sail from Piraeus and Rafina near Athens and link Mykonos with Tinos, Paros, Naxos and Santorini; most arrive at the new port at Tourlos, about 2 km north of Chora. Buses run from Chora to the main beaches, and in summer sea taxis connect the bays of the south coast.
