Takenohama Beach holidays
On the Sea of Japan coast of Hyōgo Prefecture, the sandy crescent of Takenohama Beach curves in front of Takeno, a small fishing town that is part of Toyooka city. The coast around it belongs to the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, where waves have cut the volcanic and granite rock into caves, arches and sea stacks, and in July and August the beach fills with swimmers from Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto.
Beaches
Takenohama is a long, gently shelving beach of fine sand, with breakwaters offshore that calm the water in front of it. During the managed swimming season in July and August, lifeguards are on duty and beach huts rent parasols and floats, which suits families; check the current opening dates and lifeguard hours. Kirihama Beach, a short drive west of Takenohama, is a smaller cove with clear water and a rock formation known as Hasakari-iwa standing in the shallows. Outside summer the Sea of Japan can be rough, especially in winter.
Things to do
The Nekozaki Peninsula at the western end of Takenohama has walking paths along cliffs and rock formations, and snorkelling tours and sea kayaking trips explore the coves of the San'in Kaigan Geopark in summer. Kitamaekan, a small museum near the beach, tells the story of the Kitamae-bune trading ships that called at Takeno, and has a hot-spring bath. Kinosaki Onsen, one stop and about ten minutes away by local train, is known for its public bathhouses and willow-lined canal (check which baths are open during your stay), and Genbudō Park near Toyooka shows columns of basalt formed by lava. From about November to March, the ports of the San'in coast land snow crab, which many local inns serve in winter.
Weather and best time to visit
From June to July the sea at Takenohama Beach gains about 5 °C (9 °F), its biggest monthly rise of the year.
Summers on the San'in coast are warm and humid, while winters are cold, snowy and windy, with strong north-westerly winds from the Asian mainland. The rainy season usually brings frequent showers from June into July, and typhoons can pass in late summer and early autumn. Takenohama can be busy during the summer holidays, including Obon in mid-August.

Small family-run inns (minshuku) line the streets behind Takenohama, many serving fresh seafood. Kinosaki Onsen, about ten minutes away by train, has a wider choice of traditional ryokan with hot-spring baths.

Airport and getting there
Allow about 25 minutes to walk from Takeno Station on the JR San'in Line to Takenohama Beach. From Osaka, limited express trains reach Kinosaki Onsen in roughly two and a half to three hours, and a local train continues to Takeno in about ten minutes. The nearest airport is Tajima Airport (TJH), served by flights from Osaka Itami and about 30 to 40 minutes from Takeno by car; check current routes and timetables for your dates.
