Cayo de Agua holidays
Cayo de Agua lies on the western edge of Los Roques, a Venezuelan archipelago of coral cays, sandbanks and lagoons in the Caribbean, about 160 km north of Caracas. The archipelago has been a national park since 1972, and only one island, Gran Roque, has a village, an airstrip and places to stay.
Beaches
Cayo de Agua is known for its sandbar, a narrow strip of white sand that links it with a neighbouring cay and separates two areas of shallow, clear water, and a small lighthouse stands on the cay. Boat trips from Gran Roque take about an hour. Closer to the village, Francisquí has a natural pool behind the reef known as La Piscina, and Madrisquí and Crasquí have long beaches with shallow water. Things to do
Snorkelling and diving along the reefs, kitesurfing in the steady trade winds and fly fishing for bonefish on the shallow flats are the main activities in Los Roques. On Gran Roque, a short climb leads to the ruins of an old lighthouse, the Faro Holandés, with a view across the lagoons at sunset. Day trips by boat visit a different cay each day, and on Dos Mosquises a scientific station raises young sea turtles before releasing them.

The sun on the white sand and shallow water is strong all year, so shade and sun protection matter on boat days. The busiest periods are Venezuelan holidays such as Christmas, Carnival and Easter.
Hotels and where to stay
Most accommodation in Los Roques is on Gran Roque, in small guesthouses called posadas along the sandy streets of the village, and many include meals and boat trips in the price; overnight stays aboard charter boats are another option. The archipelago has no large hotels, and national park rules limit new building.

Airport and getting there
Small planes fly to the airstrip on Gran Roque from Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS) at Maiquetía near Caracas, a flight of about 40 minutes, and charter flights from Isla Margarita may be available by arrangement. A national park fee is charged on arrival, and visitors should check their government's travel advice for Venezuela before booking.
