Where to go for a beach holiday in July

July gives Mediterranean travellers plenty of warm-water choices, from the Adriatic to the Greek islands and southern Turkey. At this point, choosing the very hottest coast is less useful than finding the right beach: sand or pebbles, easy water access, shade and somewhere to eat nearby.

Choose the beach, not just the temperature

Rimini suits a holiday built around a sandy resort promenade, while Rovinj offers an old-town base and a more varied shoreline. In the Aegean, the summer meltemi can affect exposed beaches, so check which side of the island your nearest beach lies on. If very warm water does not appeal, compare Atlantic destinations with the Mediterranean; the Algarve's summer sea averages are cooler than Mallorca's. Plan longer walks for the cooler part of the day and check local conditions before swimming.
